Update from Anthony Goddard

Another day in May ...

With everything that's been going on, I just wanted to give you an update on what it's been like here, and tell you what God's been doing in the midst of the "crisis."

The beautiful starlit sky... (more freetime = getting back into photography)

His Burden with His Strength

What are you guys up to these days? Working from home? Classes online? New hobby? Remodeling the house? Learning new recipes? I've seen so many of us finding new ways to study and be productive. I even considered doing something myself. Do you want to know what it was? Learning German! Why? Not because I need to, but for one main reason, to be ultra productive.

My story of learning German is really short. I decided to start learning the language, talked to someone in Germany about learning German, and the next day I woke up and realized that it was an unnecessary stress, and quit! Hahaha! It was pathetic and funny, and I hope you don't give up so easily on things that are truly important.

Why tell this story, you may ask? Well, let me tell you the rest of the story. Today I had another opportunity to talk with my new German friend, and you know what? He and I had an awesome conversation about finding purpose in life, what gives us purpose, and how we truly find that purpose amidst all the other voices in this world. I asked him if he reads the Bible and he said that he's read some, but never read the whole thing, but he thought he might start reading it again. Would you pray with me that this might be the first of many opportunities to share with him the truth about who God is and specifically what He's done for us through Jesus.

Through this simple story God's been teaching me this lesson, that is, taking up His burden, and not mine.

Matthew 11:28-30
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

What kind of "extra burdens" might we be carrying? Self-righteousness? People's expectations? Performance based acceptance? Fear?

I think a lot of us tend to carry more than we were ever meant to. Many of us are stressed, worried about what others think of us, or simply have personal standards that are unattainable. All those things add up to a very heavy, unbearable burden..

In this process of language learning, God has shown me more of my heart than I really wanted to see. All those things I mentioned above are things that God's shown me that I still need to die to in order to exchange my burden for His. As you think of it, please pray with me that I would learn to appropriate what God's already given us in Christ, and that I'd learn to take on His burden.

Bike ride!
I'm so thankful for the friendships that God's allowed me to make here! In this photo we're out enjoying the beautiful weather by going bike riding.

Prayer Requests
1) For continued wisdom in language learning. I'm now able to speak in paragraphs, which makes me super happy! However, there are still lots of words and cultural stuff I don't know. Pray God would help me to know the right questions to ask to learn these things.
2) For my new friend in Germany, that God might get a hold of his life. And for wisdom as to how to be a light to him.
3) For patience and peace for me. Every day I see more flaws in me, and it's hard for me to wait for God to work those things out of my life. But I ask for prayer as God teaches me to die to self that Christ's life might live through me.

Thanks for reading and for your prayers!
